My species profile is on the ruby-throated hummingbird. I found an article about the bird from Cornell University, the article contains a brief description of the bird. The description talks about what continents the bird lives on, what the bird eats, and where it migrates to in the early fall. It also talks about how to attract these birds to your backyard, like what feeders to use and how to prepare the feeder mix.  The article also discusses some “cool facts” about the bird such as the average wingspan and the age of the oldest living bird.

Currency: The information is fairly current as the article was published or last revised in 2017. This doesn’t affect the information very much because of the topic. this article does not contain links I think this is because it is a university and they have conducted their own research.

Relevance: This relates to my topic obviously because it’s about the species im researching. The intended audience is bird connoisseurs or people looking for a brief understanding of the bird. The information is fairly easy to understand yet not too simple

Authority: this article was published by Cornell University. Im not sure the authors name but they are affiliated with Cornell University which makes them qualified. No contact info

Accuracy: not sure where the info is from there are no links. the info is supported by research of the university. the tone is unbiased.  only scammed through it but I didn’t see any spelling or grammar errors

Purpose:  The purpose is to inform and teach. The intention of the article is clear.  The article is fact oriented not propaganda. No political, ideological, cultural, political, or institutional biases

TIB Final Draft

American Gun Laws

I Believe most of the fundamental gun laws regarding what guns civilians are legally allowed to own and carry should remain the same. I also believe that many of the left-leaning news platforms present a false narrative of what’s going on in America and other countries by using cherry-picked statistics.

For example, Piers Morgan talks about the fact that gun deaths are higher in the United States than in his native country England, which is true but is very misleading. First of all majority of shootings are gang-related, and a large portion of those guns are illegal firearms and also a chunk of the shootings are also suicides, so these to parts of the data inflate the data. In Piers Morgans country their violent crime rate is sky high compared to the united state, this is due to the fact that people can no longer protect themselves without their firearms. If you look at the united states violent crime rate it is fairly low compared to England. Another important piece to look at is the number of crimes and violent crimes stopped by guns in the US, which is significantly higher than the number of gun deaths.

I can provide an example that supports my this I believe statements where the current gun laws helped to stop a shooting and where the left doesn’t report stories that go against their narrative. On November 5, 2017, a man shot up a Baptist church in Texas killing 26 people that day, the shooter was stopped by a local man named Stephen Willeford who lived near the church, Willeford perused the shooter in his bare feet armed with his AR-15 and put a stop to the shooter. This was the most fatal shooting in Texas history and still, many people living in Texas and the US have not heard of this shooting. Generally, when there’s a mass shooting of this caliber everyone with access to a television, a smartphone or even a newspaper will get word of the terrible incident,  including Canada.

I would just like to say before I wrap this up I don’t believe the gun laws are perfect in America, I think the government could come up with some better more efficient ways to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people to reduce the number of mass shootings. I just don’t believe banning certain guns will make any difference what so ever.

And for all these reasons and more this is why I believe that majority of the gun laws set in place in America should remain the same, and that some left-leaning stations only report on stories that support their agenda.

I think profiling and creating inventories of endangered species play an important role in conserving more species that are more susceptible to human-made change. For example, climate change and pollution. I think if it wasn’t for this organization of environmentalists that regularly update the list the issue would worsen sort of like a snowball rolling down a hill it gets larger faster and faster.  This organization also helps us understand why these animals are endangered and what is causing it and how we can help stop the issue.

I think there is always something more that can be done to resolve a conflict but as of now to take any further steps in the right direction we need the compliance and effort of everyone. I don’t know if this is possible because people just don’t care if a species is endangered or even goes extinct. you also have the people that simply don’t believe in climate change, so in the case of the collared pika, someone might here they are going endangered due to climate change and think that is foolish and never think twice about it.

As for actions to take to help and to do more I think it would start with the overall population making a change. Things like carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses which are putting forth towards worsening global warming. We should maybe start by putting more restrictions on the lumber industry which ultimately destroys many animals homes and could worsen biodiversity in many areas.

After reading the article about Wikipedia and its Wikipedians, I believe that Wikipedia can be more credible than  most people give it credit for. But there still is the odd chance of the article containing misinformation and a certain bias depending on who the writer is. This is because of their unique system of allowing anyone who signs up to edit or write articles on what ever they please.  Personally I’ve done fine researching on Wikipedia, I’ve found that most of the topics I researched were factually accurate in comparison to other websites.

I think teachers prohibit the use of Wikipedia because anyone is able to write what they believe and how they interpret certain facts making it susceptible to easy bias and lies. But i think its mainly simply the fact that anyone can hop on their computer and start editing or writing their own article. I also think many teachers ban the use of Wikipedia because its simply to easy to get information from. Usually you need three to five references for your citation and with Wikipedia it has all the information you need releasing the need for three to five references. I also think teachers are trying to teach their students to not trust just one site and to do their diligence while researching.

I’m not quite sure if I agree or disagree with the teachers position because I’ve had many good experiences with Wikipedia when researching different topics. But from a professional writing perspective i can understand banning the use of Wikipedia because there is always a chance that an article may have incorrect facts or a bias outlook. So i guess i would agree with the teachers positon

I think what Anne Lamont meant when she was talking about “shitty first drafts” is the first draft you type is just meant for you to spew all of your ideas out weather they are great ones or shitty, it doesn’t matter because it is only your first draft. The first draft also allows you to write without shame or embarrassment of what  you are writing because you know no one is going to see it other than the yourself. She also touched on the fact that writing is not as easy as just sitting down at your desk rolling your sleeves up and writing fully formed passages as fast as a court reporter, her words not mine.  Anne went off on a little bit of a tangent but what i think she was trying to say is how shitty first drafts are meant as a warm up to get the writer thinking each time they sit down to write their piece, because if you try to write your best piece of work every time you sit down to write you’ll just be sitting there stumped with nothing to show for in writing.  When your stumped when writing, the idea of a shitty first draft is to allow for unfiltered writing and ideas, which can be the result of shitty pieces of writing and some great pieces of writing.  After the shitty first draft is complete the shitty pieces are then burned in the fire of shame and the great ones move on to the next level which is the second draft.
