Happy December faculty members! As you prepare to wrap-up teaching and grading for the F2021 term, we wanted to kick-off our last issue of 2021 with a warm message of gratitude for all the work have you done this term.\u00a0<\/p>

You can access them here:\u00a0LDS Team Website<\/a>.\u00a0 For the new year and new term, you might consider having LDS Team can prepare school\/faculty<\/span>\u00a0specific presentations related to specialized topics in teaching & learning, including assessments, teaching with technology, and designing online for flexibility. Experienced\u00a0faculty<\/span>, or anyone interested in this LDS service, might consider utilizing this kind of support through the LDS website. We understand that this time of year can bring fatigue, but it also offers everyone the chance for rest, renewal, and reflection. With the challenges that 2022 will come with, we want to remind you that LDS Team is here to support you and is thinking about the kinds of programming and support you will need in the upcoming W2022 term. Based on the feedback from the W2022 Week 0 – presurvey sent out from the LDS email, faculty have identified several priority areas for LDS training. These include offerings that focus on flexible assessment, supporting digital literacy among faculty and students, and the continued use and implementation of eTools.<\/p>

LDS is planning on delivering a mix of our standard and pre-recorded offerings for faculty who anticipate that Week 0 will be busy with the return to campus and preparations for Week 1. There will, however, be two new offerings running for faculty to attend. One that focuses on flexible assessment, and another that will offer faculty the chance to learn how to download and use Camtasia to create and edit video presentations to support content display and\/or student assessment.\u00a0<\/p>

Flexible Due Dates\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>

As a faculty member,\u00a0how much of your time and\u00a0energy\u00a0is spent dealing with assessment due dates?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Think about all the steps you take to prompt students, including the reminders you send, plus the time you dedicate to handling issues, student questions, and extension requests.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps you\u00a0find that your students are young,\u00a0straight out of high school and\u00a0unprepared\u00a0for the rigors of\u00a0balancing\u00a0college,\u00a0paid employment, caring for dependent family\u00a0members,\u00a0managing\u00a0with personal issues\u00a0and so on. The reasons that students ask for\u00a0accommodations\u00a0are varied, and even high achievers sometimes need\u00a0additional\u00a0time to do their best work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

If you have considered\u00a0any of these factors, or constraints for your students,\u00a0flexible\u00a0due dates might be the solution to some of these things!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The science of learning\u00a0shows that\u00a0when educators\u00a0are flexible\u00a0with\u00a0due\u00a0dates, it\u00a0can reduce stress, anxiety,\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0issues for students,\u00a0while\u00a0also\u00a0increasing the\u00a0quality\u00a0of their\u00a0learning and work.\u00a0The other benefit is that\u00a0faculty can\u00a0focus their time on more important\u00a0and productive\u00a0matters\u00a0than handling extension inquiries, and\u00a0submissions spread out\u00a0over\u00a0a\u00a0short\u00a0time\u00a0can make marking more manageable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Not all assignments\u00a0or courses\u00a0lend\u00a0themselves\u00a0to flexible due dates, and\u00a0this\u00a0is not a one-size-fits-all solution. However, most\u00a0faculty\u00a0could\u00a0(and even should)\u00a0consider ways to increase flexibility, especially\u00a0with\u00a0the impacts\u00a0and changes\u00a0of the COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0on our learners and\u00a0education,\u00a0remote delivery,\u00a0and\u00a0helping students\u00a0transition\u00a0to on-campus learning.\u00a0Can you think of one assignment in a course you teach that may be suitable for flexible due dates? Start there!\u00a0<\/span>Many students want, need, and may expect it, and f<\/span>lexibility fits with Universal\u00a0Design for Learning\u00a0principles and best practices. Under UDL, the goal is to\u00a0optimize the learning environment and reduce barriers to education for vulnerable and underrepresented populations, a key priority under Fleming\u2019s Strategic and Academic plans.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Like many things, there seems to be\u00a0two\u00a0extremes when it comes to flexible\u00a0due dates.\u00a0On one side we have\u00a0fixed\u00a0policies\u00a0that\u00a0state that\u00a0all students must meet the specified deadline or receive 0.\u00a0There may be\u00a0a tiny bit of\u00a0flexibility\u00a0such as\u00a0extensions to those who request it, extra time based on formal accommodation plans, late penalties, etc.\u00a0The instructor or program sets the rules, and all students are to abide by the due date schedule…or else.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On the\u00a0other side, some courses (especially asynchronous online ones) can\u00a0be organized so students\u00a0go-at-their-own-pace. With\u00a0complete control over\u00a0deadlines;\u00a0they\u00a0can hand anything in at any time during the semester.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Instead of the\u00a0extremes, here are\u00a0a few\u00a0ideas that fall\u00a0in\u00a0the middle:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
