#4: Three Little Kittens

#4: Three Little Kittens

Genre: Nursery Rhyme

What’s the story about:

This story is about three little kittens and their mittens. The nursery rhyme starts off with the kittens losing their mittens, and their mother taking away their pie. The kittens then found their mittens and were given their pie back. The kittens wear their mittens and eat their pie. The kittens get their mittens dirty and their mother is upset with them. The kittens wash their mittens, and their mother is happy with her good kittens.

Elements of Literature:

This story does not specify where the story takes place, however one would assume it takes place at their home. The theme of this story is to persevere. The kittens did not give up when they lost their mittens and found them. They then got their mittens dirty and thought to wash them. This story does not have much characterization. It refers to the main characters as “the three little kittens” and “mother”. This story is written similar to a poem. It has short sentences that are spilt between different lines, whenever there is a common or period. The story also rhymes and can be sung as a song. The point of view is a narrator, with the kittens and mother both having dialog between each other.

Reflection:

The connect I made with this story is that a lot of nursery rhymes are songs that children sing in school. I personally went to nursery school where we sang songs such as “The Three Little Kittens” and I remember this particular story. I was able to find one criticism of this story is that the mother has concerning parenting strategies. The author of the article went on to say, “the mother seems prone to mood swings and is unfamiliar with the concept of unconditional love” (Renee, 2013). This story is suitable to any age group as it is primarily read to children.
