All college courses should be 100% online.

Hello, my name is Teshéya Francis and I believe that all college courses should be 100% online. But before i get into that, let me introduce myself… I am an eight-teen year old female that is currently attending college at Fleming College in Peterborough. I am doing fairly well in all of my classes, as far as I know, and I am currently commuting from Oshawa to Peterborough everyday. So, I personally feel that all colleges should be 100% online because , let’s be honest, not everyone is going to be able to make to class all the time.

I believe all college courses should be 100% online because, if all college courses were 100% online, it would provide a more comfortable learning environment and more convenience and flexibility. If all college courses were 100% online it would provide a more comfortable learning environment because students would be able to get school work done in whatever attire that they choose to wear. They would also be able to get the work done without having to rush to get home, just to simply beat traffic, they wouldn’t have to worry about leaving work or class early because they have other things to do, and they would not have to miss out on important family time.

Lastly, I believe that all college courses should be 100% online because what if you were in a circumstance, where you were not always able to make it to class all the time. What would you want? I want you to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. Think of yourself as a single mother, with two kids, and nobody to take care or watch them for you. And you know in heart that you want to have the best possible future for your kids. So, you start to attend college, which is very hard at times because you have no one to watch your kids, while you are trying to do better for their future. So, what would you want if you were a single mother, with no one to watch your children? What would you want?

To conclude, I believe that all college courses should be 100% online because it would provide a comfortable learning environment, more convenience and flexibility and it would help individuals in circumstances, where they are not always able to make to class, for whatever reasons.

Do you think that age fluidity should be in the LGTBQ community?

No, I do not think age fluidity should be in the LGTBQ community. The first reason why I feel this way is because I believe that the pedophiles would join, this community to not be accountable for their actions, and a pedophile is a person that is sexually attracted to children.

What is age fluidity?

Age fluidity is a person whose age identity is not fixed, and can change over time, depending on the situation.

I feel that if age fluidity is part of the LGTBQ community, that children would be in danger. For example, there is a guy named Gregg and he is 43, but he sees himself as a nine year old girl. Gregg sleeps with an actual nine year old boy named Brian. I feel that age fluidity would give people who claim to be ‘age fluid’ a ‘go-ahead card’ to sleep or start romantic relationships with children.

Lastly, I feel that if age fluidity was set and stone, in the LGTBQ community, that it will cause major issues to the justice system. For example, Gregg is 43, and sleeps with Brian a  9 year old boy. The news, television and law classify it as sexual assault (rape) but Gregg argues that he is age fluid, and long story short, gets away with what he did.

To conclude, I feel that age fluidity should not be apart of the LGTBQ community because I believe that it is a cover for pedophiles to hide under, I believe that it put children in danger and I also believe that it will cause much more issues and problems in the justice system.

What is your greatest area of strength in writing?

To be honest, I am not entirely sure on what my greatest area of strength is in writing. But, if I had to guess, I would say it would probably detail. I believe detail is my greatest area of strength because, when I am passionate about a topic, and I’m not forced to do it, I am not afraid to go above and beyond in my writing.

Do you have a strategy that helps make this easier?

No, I don’t believe that i do have a strategy. I usually just mentally think about what I’m going to write about first then i just write it. I just really, only go with the flow in my head. Not sure if that is a strategy though.

What is one writing challenge you would like to focus on for your Profile assignment?

I think one personal writing challenge for me that I would like to focus on , while writing my Profile would be, sticking to my brainstorm, and not changing my whole entire plan of what I wanted to do. This is because many times I find with me is that I am constantly changing my mind.

How did you improve on this challenge for your TIB?

Well, with the Profile, I am not just going entirely off of my head , like I did with the TIB. with the Profile more brainstorming is involved.

What strategies and/or tools will be helpful for you moving forward?

More planning/ brainstorming, and asking for help if I need any.

When writing your first draft, which type of draft (builder) do you normally produce?

When writing my first draft I am usually the second type of builder (the ones who produce an finished house that is overdecorated and cluttered). I write like this because, when I first start drafting something, I usually have so much ideas, that don’t always fit, but after I go  back and change things that do not really fit in with the topic of the writing.

What are the unique challenges this poses for you when producing a second draft?

Sometimes, I find when writing a second draft, i have trouble with letting certain things go. This is because when I first start writing, I write a lot, and if there is a certain amount of word requirement, I find myself having to cut a lot of things out.

Choose a statement from Secret #2 or #3 that, in your opinion, provides the most valuable advice and explain why.

From Secret #2 , one thing or piece of advice from it that stands out for me is ‘practice’. The article says, “trial and error process is how you develop focus in your objective eye and sharpen its ability…” (Shope B, 2002). From this quotation, I got two revelations, that does not really have anything to do with writing. What I got from this quotation is that practice makes perfect, or damn near close to perfect. The other revelation I got from this writing is that, every heart ache and pain that we go through, develops us, and shapes us up into who we need to be in the future. In other words, the trial and error process, sharpens our characters, and molds us into the individual God has called us out to be.

For this weeks blog, I chose the reading from week 3. The reading from week 3 is “The Last Stop”.

The descriptive passage I chose, that I thought was very vivid and detailed was, “In the boardroom, where we sit, broad windows face the Pacific Bell building, a neo-gothic skyscraper reaching for the city’s fog-skimmed summer skies. Over a can of Fresca, Ms. Gardner explains that she wanted to work for the Wikimedia Foundation…”(Stren ,2012).

The quotation that I chose creates a strong profile because it is very vivid and detailed.  The quotation that I chose is vivid because, to be vivid means to have clear images in the mind, and a part of the quotation that causes me to have clear image/images is the part, where the writer says, “In the boardroom, where we sit, broad windows face the Pacific Bell building, a neo-gothic skyscraper reaching for the city’s fog-skimmed summer skies…”(Stren ,2012). I am not sure about you, but when I read this quotation, I imagine it as if, I am watching a movie. I also think that the use of words, and physical things, that the writer uses also contributes to making the writing a vivid piece.

The quotation is also detailed because the writer goes in depth about the whole thing. The writer doesn’t just write it , but describes it. This is because in the part where the writer says, “In the boardroom, where we sit, broad windows face the Pacific Bell building, a neo-gothic skyscraper reaching for the city’s fog-skimmed summer skies…”(Stren ,2012). The writer could’ve just simply said “we sat in a boardroom” but the writer decided to go in detail, and this is a great thing because I believe that it further catches the readers attention, because the reader feels like they are in that room as well.

Why is body language and the work environment important when researching to write a profile?

I believe body language and the work environment are important when researching to write a profile, because if a person is not comfortable in the environment they are in, they may with hold certain answers to certain questions. They would with hold certain information because they do not trust the environment they are in. Body language is also an important thing , when researching to write a profile. Body language is important because 99% of the things people say are not verbalized. Meaning if you are a journalist or a interviewer asking questions, it is your job to see how the person you are asking questions to , is feeling, because many time people do not tend to say how they really feel. So , if you are interviewing someone , and their whole body is in another direction opposite than you, that is a good indication to stop the interview, because their body language shows that they are not interested in the conversation anymore.

How might observing body language affect your interpretation of what the subject is saying?

Body language may affect what the person is saying in many ways. For example, if you are interviewing someone and you ask them a question about their childhood, and all of a sudden while they are answering the question, they cross their arms. This would be a good indication showing that the question you asked them , made them uncomfortable and you should not ask questions similar to the one that you just asked. Just to be safe, and to make the person you are interviewing be at ease.

In the article I read Brian Cable profiles the Goodbody Mortuary. Do I think it is a well-written profile of this building/business? If so, what makes it strong? If not, how could it be improved?

Yes I do think Brain Cable did a good job profiling the Goodbody Mortuary, however it could have been better. The reason why is because Brian described the Goodbody Mortuary as a “odd pink structure set in the middle of a business district. On the top of the Goodbody Mortuary sign was a large electric clock”.

Brain did not describe the Goodbody building to his full potential because when  I looked at images of the Goodbody Mortuary, there was no electric clock seen in any of the pictures. Although Brian did an okay job describing the Goodbody Mortuary. He could have done a better job, with describing the building. I believe if he had given more detail about the Goodbody Mortuary, it would have given the readers an easier time to visualize the building for them selves. Me, personally, I was having a hard time visualizing the building, let alone getting into the reading.

Overall, I feel like it was boring and hard to get into. If I were to give another piece of advice to Brian, it would be to get the readers attention, because to be totally honest, this was a very brutal read for me.

To conclude, I believe that Brian should work on craft, especially if trying to captivate a readers attention.

Oh! By the way, this is the picture of the Goodbody Mortuary, that I came across online!

How I feel about Wikipedia. (267 words)

Do I think Wikipedia is a credible source? No I do not. The reason being is because it is basically used by any and everybody. So, basically a child can write something on Wikipedia. A student in high school can write something on Wikipedia, even a professor or someone with a PHD can write about anything. The concern with that, is that you do not know if what the individuals are saying is true, and Wikipedia can be edited at any time by anybody.

Why do many teachers, prohibit their students from using Wikipedia for essays and reports? I think that teachers prohibit their students from using Wikipedia because articles or information can be written by anyone. Meaning that the person writing the article may not be an expert in that specific category or topic , that they are writing about.

Lastly, do I disagree or agree that Wikipedia, is a credible source? To be honest , in certain areas I believe that it is a credible source, but in other areas I disagree. For example, not every single person that writes articles and provides information on Wikipedia is an expert. However, in certain articles, and on certain topics , there are a bunch of ‘Wikipedians’, that know what they are talking about. Me, personally , I use Wikipedia, but before I write down my research , I go to the bottom of the page to make sure, that the sources, where the editors got the information from lines up with the topic that they are doing the article on.

To conclude, I agree and disagree that Wikipedia is a credible source.

Crappy First Drafts (Blog One)(300 words)

Question #2 :

How do you write? Describe your writing process. For example, do you write first drafts? Why or why not? Do you edit every sentence as you write? Explain and explore your writing process.

How do I write?  To be honest , I am not really too sure. All I know,  is that when I first write it is a whole bunch of chicken scratch, that only I can understand.

Do I write first drafts? Yes! I totally one hundred percent do! It is something that my mother has instilled in me , since I was a little kid. My mother is a ‘perfectionist’ , so you can only imagine what it was like for me when i asked her to edit my english essay’s for me. She would always be sending me back to my room, to change this and that, “and oh, that’s not spelled properly”. So, yes to answer the question I do write first drafts.

Do I edit every sentence as I write? To be honest, no I do not edit every single sentence as i write. I usually write everything out that I need to, then I later go back over everything, for spelling and grammar errors.

Explain and explore my writing process. Okay, usually when I begin writing something, I think about what I want to write in my mind first, and then I write it out. After it is written out I read it over just to make sure that it makes sense ( it usually never makes sense). After I read it over I usually have corrections to make. After I make changes to , what I feel needs changes, I have someone edit over my writing for me, because sometimes I find, I miss certain things, like grammar and double words. This is my writing process.
