Settings of Preference

Of all the six settings that a Child and Youth Practitioner can work in, which include residential facilities, family homes, schools, street work, hospitals, and community work, I would most like to work in a school setting, and in the community.

School setting:

Working in a school setting would allow me to be around children/youth on a constant basis, and I feel as if I would make the most impact. I would be able to organize anti-bullying campaigns, and group therapies during break time if the children/youth are interested. I could develop a great rapport with the students and families, all the while making sure the students are safe and have a voice. I would make sure that the student’s voice is heard in any circumstance, and for any type of abuse.

Community Work:

Working in the community would have similar effects as working in a school, however, I would be able to work with a broader age group and I would be able to get to know the community on a personal level. It is so important to feel as if you really belong in a community, and I feel that if I am granted that privilege, I will make sure the children/youth/families also feel important.

I would organize events for mental health awareness, anti-bullying, LGBTQ+, and people that are differently abled, as well as do the best I can to make sure accommodations are in place for every individual’s needs.
