At the time, I couldn’t see the problem with my actions. My mindset was “just pass” or “just do as little as possible” and I wish that I had realised sooner that it was a problem. This idea I had about putting forward little to no effort quickly led to bad results (shocking, I know). At age six-teen I failed my first class. And as you might expect, my parents were NOT thrilled. The low marks on my report card led to a huge argument. The argument ended with my parents’ suggestion that I find a new home if I continue my less than fantastic pattern of behaviour. Me being the stubborn person that I am, decided this was a wonderful idea. “I’ll be free do whatever I want woohoo!” Oh Boy was I naïve…

So I set out, job searching and apartment hunting, all the while partying it up and crashing on friends’ couches. Once the party phase wore off and I began reminiscing the comfort of my bed I buckled down and finally found what I thought I was looking for… A job working as a pool attendant at the Holiday Inn, and a place to move into. A student house full of college kids looking for someone to rent out the last available room. What a life! Am I right?!

To put it gently.. living on my own for the first time sucked. I was working full time making minimum wage, and could barely afford rent and food alone. I knew I wouldn’t be happy maintaining this lifestyle forever. And then it hit me.. my parents grew up this way, they had known this feeling all too well. This is why they cared so much about my education. Something had to be done. I pulled up my socks and headed back to school. This time around, I had a whole different approach. I understood that nothing comes without a cost, and if I wanted good grades I would have to put in the work. I finished out my 12th year with the highest marks I’d ever achieved! My parents and teachers were so proud of me, and honestly, I was pretty proud of me too.

I hope that others can use my story as a lesson. Self-Improvement holds great importance. It’s what motivates us to achieve great things. Its what keeps us going when we are at our lowest and what gives us that warm fuzzy feeling of self reward when we are at our best. Without the insight I had gained on the value of self improvement I never would have been driven to move forward. So always do your best, you can do it for anyone. Your Mom, your Dad, your sibling, whoever it may be. But make sure that at the end of the day, you’re also doing it for you!

(507)

Lainah Daling

I Believe in Self-Improvement I used to be one of those kids who just skimmed by, always putting forth only the minimum effort necessary to get by while remaining unnoticed.
